"Some of our most sacred emotions are those that would be destroyed by expressing them with words, and this novel calls those out."

Very well said. I read this earlier this year and I guess I can't say I understood it. But the book affected me emotionally, and I think that's what it was aiming for.

As <a href="http://www.susanhatedliterature.net/2006/11/13/kafka-on-the-shore/" rel="nofollow">you can see</a> I had no idea what to think of this one either. But I liked it.

Wind-Up is on my shelf too, but it's so super long that I keep chickening out. But with the pleasure I had getting through this one, I think it'll be easier now.

I've also heard people say "DON'T read Kafka first." I dunno why. I suppose it doesn't matter.

Glad to hear you're alive and well ;) I was wondering where you were! This one's been on my TBR list for a looooong time. I haven't read any Murakami, so just anything of his has been on my list. I haven't heard a single bad review of this one though, so I'm looking forward to it. This one's sitting on my shelf along with The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle...everyone says to read Kafka on the Shore first as my "intro book", so I guess I'll do that.
